You are looking at one of the very few examples of "borrowed evolution". This is a
Counting Pine, a species of tree that lets other vegetables do their evolving for them, saving
millions of years of trial and error. In the dim and distant past this species tried to work out
why humans cut trees down. The entire species concluded that it was to count their rings and hence
find the tree's age. Overnight every counting pine developed a sign at about eye level telling its
precise age. Within a year the entire species was brought to near extinction by the ornamental
house numberplate industry.
