From the looks of it, this piece of glassware was meant to be a long straw, the bulge in the middlesuggesting that the glassblower coughed at a bad time. In fact, it is used by alchemists both to
measure and separate liquids from other liquids and is operated by a sophisticated mechinism: a
mouth applied to the top opening engaged in some cautious sucking. It appears to have something
written on it.
